TAFI is an enzyme that stabilizes the clot by protecting the fibrin from the clot from lysis.
TAFI is activated by thrombin and its activation is amplified in the presence of thrombomodulin.
Activated TAFI removes the C-terminal lysine and arginine residues of fibrin which are necessary for the binding of t-PA, plasmin and plasminogen to fibrin.
